So you figured out that you need a self storage unit, great! But how do you know what size is the right size for you? You don’t want to pay extra for space that you don’t need, but you want to make sure that you have enough room for everything you need to store. Here are some guidelines and suggestions to help you pick the right sized self storage unit!
What Dimensions?
The first thing you find when you look on any self storage website is a list of the sizes that they have available. Without mapping out the sizes on your floor, how do you know what size is what?
Here are some guidelines you can use, as well as the typical sizes of self-storage units:
5×5 – A five by five self storage unit is about the size of a small closet in your home or apartment. It can usually hold about one room’s worth of items and small or medium furniture.
5×10 – This storage unit is the size of a small walk in closet. You can store small and medium furniture, boxes or perhaps one large item with things stacked on top of it.
5×15 – The size of a large walk in closet or large basement storage. This can be ideal for appliances, larger furniture like bedroom items with plenty of room left over for boxes of personal items.
10×10 – This is about the size of half of a garage or a large walk in closet. You can get 2 or 3 rooms’ worth of items into a unit this size if you pack carefully.
10×20 – A one car garage is typically this size. This should have plenty of room for any furniture that you wish to store inside as well as room left over for boxes and other items. It can also be a good size for storing large commercial equipment. A full garage or 4 bedroom house will easily fit inside.
10×30 – Two car garage size, this can fit a full large home’s worth of stuff. It can also be used to store heavy equipment or even seasonal vehicles that you want to keep out of the elements.
Tips for your Self Storage Unit
Some things to remember about storage unit sizes:
Anything over 10 feet is going to need to have a walkway. There is no way that you could reach the back of a 10 foot storage unit without one. Make sure to factor walkways into your planning and packing. You don’t want to have to unload everything to get to items in the back.
Don’t forget the length of the trailer. A 20 foot boat is going to have at least two or three feet extra for the trailer hitch. Don’t get a 20 foot unit for a 20 foot boat.
Take a tour of the unit before you rent. This is the best way to judge the size.
